As we reach the five-year anniversary of concealed carry in Illinois, those who were among the very first to obtain their CCW permit will need to make sure that they’ve completed the renewal course in order to keep it valid.  This is something which needs to be done every five years, and it’s been made clear that law enforcement will not accept “I didn’t know” as an excuse for not keeping up to date.  Aside from being a strictly upheld law, it’s also a great way to brush up on some of the fundamental skills learned during your initial training.

What Are the Requirements for IL Concealed Carry Renewal?

Unlike the initial classes which entail either 8 or 16 hours of training, the renewal process is much simpler.  For renewals, you will need to complete two hours in the classroom and one hour of range time.  This gives you and your instructor the opportunity to go over any basics that may have been lost or forgotten over the years, while addressing any concerns or questions you may have developed since last taking the full class.

  • Refresher course on basics such as draw, care, storage and transport
  • Hands on instruction from your instructor on technique and shooting
  • Clarification on any new compliance laws or regulation changes
  • Range time to practice your skills and ensure that you’re prepared
  • Information on upcoming classes for developing advanced techniques

Once you’ve completed the renewal course, you’ll be given a certificate stating that you’ve successfully taken the required measures to renew your CCW permit, and instructions on how to go about updating your status with the state.
